Letters of Reference are required to apply for the CADAC. Many candidates have difficulty obtaining these because the professionals that trained them are very busy. One alternative is to give the resource person a letter so that they can edit it (quicker than making it from scratch), or that they can choose to sign, if it expresses what they want to say. It is recommended that you write the letter and prepare it for signature, and include a stamped envelope addressed to the CADAC board.

Re: <candidates name>
Dear Credentialing Board,
I am writing this letter in support of <candidates name>'s application to become a Certified Addictions Counselor. I have known <candidate's name> <years/months> in my work with <put in the setting in which the reference knows your work>.
(If the reference has not been able to observe your interaction with clients directly, explain how the individual is acquainted with you and why they are able to speak to your qualifications, for example "I am aware of the candidates work at the methadone clinic these past three years because...)
<candidate> has made me aware of the scope of practice in the 12 core functions of addiction counselors and it is my observation that <candidate> is competent in these areas.
It is my belief that <candidate> practices according to the ethical guidelines included with the CADAC application, and will be a positive asset to the field of substance abuse treatment. I have encouraged <applicant> to pursue credentialing in this field so that the public and professional community will be able to recognize <his/her> skills.
If you have any questions or require any further information, my contact information is at the bottom of this letter of recommendation.
Sincerely,
<four spaces>
<name, credentials, address, phone and email of reference)
