Credentialing
LicensureIt is illegal to provide professional counseling in the State of New Mexico without a license. However, there are many professional licenses that include, within the scope of practice, services to substance use disordered clients. Among these are MD, DO, RN, Licensed Psychologists, LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMFT, LPAT, and many more. If you wish to provide treatment to persons with substance use disorders and you already have a license that allows this, then you are encouraged to look into other alternatives for credentialing, such as Certification. Unlike Licensure, Certification is portable across State lines, and is recognized around the world. Certification is a voluntary process that is very similar to licensure. Often the requirements are nearly identical, because Certification existed first, and most licensure laws are based on the certification standards. Certification is recommended for those who already have licensure but would like a credential that demonstrates they are a specialist in a certain field. For example, a person may have an LMHC or LPCC but want to let the public know that they specialize in substance abuse. Such a person can become certified, without having to apply for a second license such as a LADAC. There are two major certifying bodies, one is the IC&RC, the other is NAADAC. There are several levels of certification available from each. You can use the "study" link on the left to get information on how to prepare for licensure exams. How do I decide which type of credentialing is right for me?
