Requesting an Individual
Case Review by the Licensure Board
If you have been told
that your degree is not included in the list of approved degrees, but you
believe that your education is equal to, or better than, what you might receive
in one of those programs, you may present your case to the Board.
-
First you must
submit a standard application for LSAA or LADAC. In accordance
with the rules and regulations, an application must be on file prior to the
Board review.
-
If your application
indicates that your education is adequate, the Board Administrator may
automatically put you on the agenda. If not....
-
You will receive a
denial letter, indicating that you do not qualify for a license because you
do not hold a related degree. Do not despair! This letter is
your ticket to the review. Do not get upset with the Board office
staff. They have to follow the Law also, and that means they cannot
accept a non-related degree. The administrator does not have the
authority to approve an application with education that is not in the
regulations, however, the Board can.
-
Respond immediately
and ask that your application be reviewed on a case by case basis and get
yourself placed on the agenda for the next Board Meeting.
-
While you are
waiting for the meeting, begin immediately to prepare your "case" by
assembling the needed documents. If there is enough time, you can send
one copy to the Board office for duplicating (45 days are recommended). A
copy will be needed by each of the Board members, so do this quickly.
If there is not enough time before the meeting, make your own copies and
bring them with you. Your
documents are considered "evidence" or "exhibits".
-
When the date
arrives, you attend the Board meeting as a guest. You will present
your "testimony" along with your "exhibits" (written material) for consideration by the Board.
If you have brought documents that the Board does not have, arrive early and
submit them to the Board Administrator so that she can review and distribute
them. When your time comes on the agenda, state that you wish the
Board to consider that your education is equal to or better than the minimum
required for the license.
Do not ask the Board to accept your unrelated degree, which would break the
Law. They cannot do this. What they can do is review your education
and determine that your education is equal to, or greater than the minimum
required.
-
You will not likely not receive an
immediate answer. The Board reviews these matters in executive session,
then will reconvene in a public setting after decisions are made. No
applicant or licensee information will be discussed in the public meeting for
confidentiality reasons. If you are not able to stay until after the
executive session, then you can wait until you receive the decision in writing.
This usually happens within a week. If more information or documentation
is needed by the Board, then you will be informed about this either at the
meeting, or by mail.
-
The Board will give
you some recommendations with your denial about how you can bring your self
up to the standards required.
If you know how your preparation might be deficient, register for classes or
workshops as soon as possible to remedy the situation. An application is
valid for 6 months, and if you can complete the required courses during that
time, you will not have to re-apply.
