"I have been told that my degree is not in an accepted field." The acceptable degrees are defined by law. If your degree is not listed, do not despair! You cannot be automatically issued a license, but there are other options. The Board administrator is not permitted to approve degrees that are not in the list, so don't expect this to happen. If your degree is in a similar field, such as criminal justice or sociology, then your application may be reviewed by the Board. The administrator may automatically put you on the agenda for the next meeting, or you can ask to be placed on the agenda. The Board will look at your coursework for classes in psychology, human services, and addictions. If you attend the Board meeting, you may not be permitted to address the Board unless you are on the agenda, so make sure you request this. You may wish to review the material on application by portfolio. "My degree is in a totally unrelated field (journalism, art, business, etc.)" Don't get discouraged. There are two methods, one is to apply by assembling a professional portfolio that will be reviewed by the Board. The above link will take you to some suggestions for this. If you need help, contact a member of NMAEN. There is currently a grandfathering period for CADAC's. This method is recommended for individuals who have a great deal of experience in the field, have not had a formal academic education, or have a degree in a non-related field. Once you obtain a CADAC, you can apply for licensure, and you will be issued a LADAC. The grandfathering period expires June 30, 2010.
