"I have been told that my degree is not in an accepted field." The acceptable degrees are defined by law. If your degree is not listed, do not despair! You cannot be automatically issued a license, but there are other options. The Board administrator is not permitted to approve degrees that are not in the list, so don't expect this to happen. If your degree is in an unrelated field, then your application may be reviewed on a "case by case" basis by the Board. If your education clearly is equal to, or greater than the minimum requirement, the Board administrator may automatically put you on the agenda for the next meeting, or you can ask to be placed on the agenda. The Board will look at your coursework for classes in psychology, human services, and addictions. If you attend the Board meeting, you may not be permitted to address the Board unless you are on the agenda, so make sure you request this. While you are waiting for your review, you need to assemble and send the necessary documents. The Administrator will want one copy of these for each member of the Board, so send them early so that they can be prepared for the meeting. If there is not time, then make your own copies and bring them with you. "My degree is in a totally unrelated field (journalism, art, business, etc.)" Don't get discouraged by this process, which can be time consuming and lengthy. Review the pages on preparing your case, and contact a member of NMAEN if you need assistance. It is incumbent upon you to demonstrate to the Licensure Board that your are academically equally, or better prepared than a person who has the approved degree. Do do this, NMAEN suggests a method that has had repeated positive results. |
