There are several high quality accredited online programs in substance abuse. All of these courses are acceptable in New Mexico for licensure. Preparation of addiction professionals is becoming more important in response to the advances in research. Our curriculum is designed to prepare counselors, as well as related professionals such as social workers, criminal justice personnel, psychologists, and nurses, for effective practice based on competencies defined by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, which is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the federal government. Students examine the theoretical foundations and research about substance abuse/addictions and learn clinical evaluation, treatment planning, referral processes, service coordination, counseling, educational methods, documentation and professional/ ethical responsibilities. All classes are available in a Web-based, online format. Internships
are arranged in the student's local community. Contact faculty advisor Dr. Iris Wilkinson for more information at iris.wilkinson@washburn.edu
