Substance Abuse Treatment Professionals are notoriously busy and function on low budgets. As a result, it is sometimes difficult to get way for quality training. The New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board prefers that counselors seeking Continuing Education Credit attend in person Training whenever possible, as the networking is an important component of professional growth. However, up to 50 % of CEUs can be earned by teaching workshops and classes, and up to 12 of those required per renewal period can be obtained through internet courses, and 12 independent study or correspondence courses. The profession of substance abuse is gradually and inevitably marching toward academic preparation for credentialing. Therefore, if you are not already involved in a college degree program, the sooner you do so, the better. Presently a candidate for Licensure in New Mexico requires at minimum an Associate Degree in a Counseling Related Field in order to qualify for a LSAA (Substance Abuse Associate-intern level licensure) New Mexico Higher Education Programs Other Higher Ed Programs including Distance Learning
